Guild - About Us

OUR MISSION:  OUR MISSION: The Northern Virginia Urban League is an auxiliary of the Northern Virginia Urban League (NOVAUL) and supports the NOVAUL’s mission to enable Northern Virginia African Americans and disadvantaged others to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights through program services and effective advocacy.

The Guild’s Mission and Purpose is to stimulate, develop and promote volunteer participation and leadership within the Urban League Guild.  The Guild promotes fund raising, public awareness initiatives and ensuring the organizations remains connected with the community.

OUR HISTORY:  The National Urban League Guild was organized in 1942 by Mrs. Mollie Moon of New York City.  She was the Guild’s founder and first president and she served as the National Guild President until her death in 1991. In May 1995, Carlton and Margaret Stockton, hosted a group of approximately fifty persons to assess their interest in forming a Guild in Alexandria. There was great enthusiasm in favor of the idea and the process was accomplished quickly and efficiently.  In August 1996, at the National Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, NOVAUL Guild received its charter.

In May of 1996, a group of concerned Northern Virginia Urban League members and from other neighboring jurisdictions, met at the home of Margaret and Carlton Stockton of Alexandria, Virginia to determine if there were sufficient resources, motivation and rationale for establishing an Urban League Guild.  The fifty or so attendees expressed such enthusiasm about forming a Guild in Northern Virginia that all of the steps required by the National Urban League were accomplished in approximately six weeks and the charter was presented in August, 1996 during the National Urban League Conference which was held in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Guild is an auxiliary of the Northern Virginia Urban League affiliate.  Our purpose is to promote and agenda which supports the Northern Virginia Urban League (NOVAUL); including fundraising, membership and program initiatives.

Since its inception, Guilders have always believed that “Our Children are Our Destiny”.  Therefore, our focus is on activities involving our youth.

Membership in the Guild is open to all persons, regardless of race, creed, religion, age, gender or economic status.  However, Guild members must be willing to support the Guild By-Laws and its program activities; and to uphold the mission of the NOVAUL.  All Guilders must be financial members of the NOVAUL and the Guild.

OUR FOCUS:  The NOVAUL Guild brings together people who are interested in enhancing the quality of life for all people in the community through the promotion of intercultural, interracial, and community service activities.  Guilders strongly believe that “Our Children Are Our Destiny” and the primary focus involves activities for our youth.  Some of the Guild activities are:
